The Ministry of Transport plans more buses, routes and subscribers for school and university transport in 2026-2027. Here are the announced figures.

For the 2026-2027 season, the Ministry of Transport expects around 4% more subscribers (pupils and students), 2,179 school and university routes compared with 2,134 the previous season, and 13% more buses dedicated to this service. This was reported by lapresse.tn, following a working meeting between Transport Minister Rachid Amri and regional transport directors.

What changes for subscribers and routes

The rise in subscriber numbers remains modest, but it comes with an expanded service. The total number of routes would rise from 3,171 to 3,234, including 2,179 school and university routes.

Another concrete point: the average age of the fleet should fall from 14 years to 12.5 years, thanks to the arrival of new vehicles. Fewer breakdowns, in theory, on the morning journeys.

A bus fleet being fully renewed

The national and regional companies have acquired 315 new buses on the local market and 762 new buses on the international market over 2025 and 2026.

That's not all. 727 additional buses are expected before the end of 2026, under an international call for tenders launched earlier in the year. Once these deliveries are complete, buses dedicated to school and university transport will account for nearly 52% of the overall passenger transport fleet.

TGM and the light metro: ongoing projects

Rail hasn't been forgotten. The acquisition of 18 new trains for the TGM line is an ongoing project, as is the renewal of the light metro fleet with 30 new trains. The latter has entered the final phase of its funding plan.
