The 2026-2027 school year started on Tuesday 15 September 2026 in Tunisia, with around 2.341 million pupils, that is 22,000 more than the previous year. According to lapresse.tn, which followed the first day at the Ksar Saïd III primary school in Tunis, everything went ahead without any particular disruption.
How the first day went
First-day timetables were staggered. First and second year primary pupils only had a short two-hour morning, from 8am to 10am.
From 10am, third, fourth, fifth and sixth year pupils headed off to school.
On the spot, a father, Maher, summed up the mood: "Everything went normally, even though they didn't have lessons this morning".
How many pupils this year
The primary cycle, including preparatory teaching, welcomes 1.195 million pupils. Middle and secondary schools account for 1.146 million.
In total, Tunisia therefore welcomes around 2.341 million pupils for this 2026-2027 school year.
More teachers and more schools
The teaching body has reached 161,300 teachers, compared with 158,400 in 2025-2026. Lapresse.tn gives the breakdown: 79,025 in primary and 82,318 in middle and secondary schools.
The education network counts 6,178 schools, up from 6,160 the previous year, for around 92,190 classes.
